The first invoice Joel Gathercole ever wrote was probably for a lawn.
He has been an entrepreneur since age 11 — newspaper routes, pool and yard maintenance, custom products sold door to door. The economics were simple and total: do the work, ask for the money, get paid, or you do not eat. Nothing in 30 years of technology has made that equation more complicated, though a remarkable amount of software has tried.
The scale changed, though. By 2002 Joel had founded Netrique Inc., developing VoIP for call centres. From 2005 to 2008 he architected and supported the Teldori product for a US-based company — a cross-border enterprise contract, invoiced internationally, carried end to end by one Canadian independent (2005 archive). Through 9204-3280 Quebec Inc. (2008-2020) he ran an independent consulting and software practice. He operated CafeVox, an internet cafe, from 2009 to 2012, plus a computer store and online retail. Different currencies, different tax regimes, different payment terms, same fundamental job: send a clear document, get money in the account.
Alongside all of it, 20 years at TriageLogic, finishing as Director of IT — architecting and securing enterprise infrastructure for highly sensitive healthcare data, where a record that cannot be traced back to its source is not a record at all.

The larger point is data sovereignty. Your invoice history is a complete map of your revenue: every client, every rate, every renewal date. Most of the tools marketed to Canadian SMBs store that on US infrastructure under US jurisdiction. Joel spent two decades being personally responsible for where sensitive data lived, and he was not willing to build a product that quietly gave that up.
